Maine Coon Vaccination Protocol
Core Vaccines
All Maine Coon kittens and breeding cats receive core vaccines recommended by veterinarians. These include FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) and rabies. These protect against the most common and serious feline diseases.
Vaccination Schedule for Kittens
Kittens start their vaccinations at around 6 to 8 weeks of age. Boosters are given every 3 to 4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks old. This schedule ensures their immune system is properly protected as maternal antibodies wear off.
Rabies Vaccination
Rabies is administered once the kitten reaches about 12 to 16 weeks of age, depending on local regulations. It is a required vaccine and is repeated as per vet guidelines, typically annually or every three years depending on the vaccine used.
Non-Core Vaccines
Depending on risk factors or regional exposure, I may also discuss optional vaccines with the vet such as FeLV (feline leukemia virus). While not required for indoor cats, this is considered for kittens going to homes with other cats or access to the outdoors.
Vet-Administered Only
All vaccines are administered by a licensed veterinarian. I do not self-vaccinate, ensuring accuracy, safety, and proper documentation. This also allows the kittens to be health-checked at each appointment.
Record Keeping and Transparency
Each kitten goes home with a complete vaccination record signed by the vet. This includes dates, batch numbers, and the next due dates, giving the new owner a clear and trustworthy medical history.
Booster Reminders and Support
I advise all new owners on when boosters and follow-up vaccinations are due. I remain available for questions after adoption to ensure continued proper care.
Long-Term Health Planning
Vaccinations are part of a broader health care strategy that includes parasite prevention, regular vet visits, and early detection. I educate each family on how to keep their Maine Coon protected throughout their life.
